Information for Patients: Ozone therapy

Ozone (O3) is regular Oxygen (O2) with an extra oxygen atom attached.
We run pure oxygen over a plasma generator to convert it to O3.

This extra oxygen atom can attack germs, in the same way your immune system does. It sterilizes bacteria, virus, fungus and even prions, which are very resistant. Ozone then turns back into regular oxygen, with no harmful byproducts.

Unlike antibiotics, germs cannot become resistant to ozone. We cannot be allergic to it, and it has no side effects when used in dentistry. Only lung and eye tissue is sensitive to ozone, so we protect these with suction and glasses.

Because Ozone rapidly works then turns back to Oxygen, we must generate it freshly before use.

Ozone gas can sterilize a cavity, allowing the deepest parts to heal and reducing the amount of decay we need to drill out, which is especially good for kids. It can also allow early cavities to harden up and heal without fillings.

Ozone gas can rapidly sterilize cold sores, ulcers and other infected areas in the mouth, and make teeth less sensitive.

Ozone can be bubbled through water, and this ozonated water can help treat gum disease by irrigating infected gum pockets. It is also used to keep our waterlines sterile without harmful byproducts.

Ozone can also be infused into olive oil for a very effective (but not very tasty) antibiotic gel which is stable long term if refrigerated.
