Does
the thought of seeing a dentist make you nervous? We have
some options which may help you to relax. These include:
- Music
via headphones (choose from our selection, listen to music
on the net or bring in your own CD)
-
TV via mini-screen- You can watch cable TV on a mini screen
while you get your dentistry done

-
Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) -- see below for more info
- Oral
Sedation- we can prescribe you a light oral sedative to
take the night before for a good rest, and for the appointment
as well. Many people find this really relaxes them nicely,
but they are still awake and aware. You must have someone
drive you to and from your appointment with oral sedation.
Last,
but certainly not least, we have a cheerful, calm, relaxed
atmosphere with professional yet humorous staff, to make your
visit to the dentist as comfortable as possible.
Questions
and Answers about Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
What
is it? It
is a mild sedative inhaled through the nose.
How
will I feel?
Nitrous Oxide Sedation is a pleasant, relaxing feeling. It
reduces anxiety, sensitivity to pain and gag reflexes. It
will not put you to sleep.
How
long does it last? Can I drive afterwards? The
sedation only lasts as long as the appointment, and can be
stopped at any time. You may drive after your appointment.
Is
it suitable for children?
Children are much more comfortable and relaxed with Nitrous
Oxide Sedation. They often do not need freezing for fillings
on baby teeth if they receive Nitrous Oxide Sedation, which
is much easier for them. It may even be fun!
Any
special precautions?
Patients who will be receiving Nitrous Oxide Sedation should
have an empty stomach.
No heavy meals within 2 hours please, or 30 minutes for a
light snack. Patients who cannot breathe through their nose
or have lung problems should not receive Nitrous Oxide.
What
about insurance? Insurance companies do not always
reimburse fully the cost of Nitrous Oxide, even if it makes
your visit easier and more pleasant. You may wish to check
your coverage to see if it is an eligible expense.
